Obituary for Prudence McGeeney (DeMaio)

Prudence McGeeney (DeMaio)
Prudence Laura “Pat” McGeeney, 91, of Dubuque died Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Stonehill Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 4, at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Friday at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road where there will be a parish wake service at 6:30 pm.
Pat was born on September 9th, 1925 to Anthony and Dorothy (Lilly) DeMaio of Dubuque, IA. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy where she played basketball and often quipped, ”was a star.”
Pat married James J. McGeeney of Charles City, IA on May 30, 1951 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dubuque. They met on a tennis court, and if you happened to be at Murphy Park on a Sunday after church you would find them enjoying the sport with their family. He preceded her in death on December 13, 2000.
Pat was a bookkeeper at her father's shoe store and was later employed at Jocille’s Fashion Corner where she celebrated her passion for people, friendship and fashion.
But it was the blessing of a close knit Italian family that was the center of Pat’s life: holiday and impromptu weekend meals with our extended family were an indelible part of life. At the nucleus were “The Sisters”: Bea, Pat, Kay & Letty, who found their passion for life in the love, drama & comedy of our family. A vibrant group of women who shaped the lives of the nieces, nephews and grandchildren who love them.
A devoted member of St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, a member of Theresian International and a Stonehill Auxiliary volunteer, Pat embraced life with grace, courage, kindness, prayer... and that smile.
She is survived by her children, Jayne (Jeff) Anglin of Dubuque, Robert McGeeney of Dubuque and James (Mary) McGeeney of San Diego, Calif; grandchildren, Ryan (Anne) Anglin of Chicago, Ill, Kristen (Kory) Ross of Midland, Mich., Erin McGeeney of San Diego, Calif., Brendan McGeeney of San Diego, Calif., and Ashley Roth of Madison, Wisc.; great grandchildren Brennan and Owen Anglin of Chicago, Ill., Clayton and Bennett Ross of Midland, Mich., and Ashari Roth of Madison, Wisc., and two sisters, Kay (Richard) Manternach of Dubuque and Letty (Joseph) Brown of Surprise, Ariz.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Carl DeMaio; a sister, Beatrice Goodmann; two brothers in law, Robert McGeeney and Daniel Goodmann and a sister in law Ruth McPartland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stonehill Care Center and Hospice of Dubuque.
