David H Gebhart
David H. Gebhart, 75, of Asbury, passed into the arms of Jesus on January 31, 2017. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 4 at the Church of the Resurrection. Burial will be held at a later date. Friends may call from 2-7 p.m., Friday at the Church of the Resurrection, where a wake service will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friends may also call from 9-10:15 a.m., Saturday at the Church of the Resurrection.
David was born on May 27, 1941 in Dyersville, IA the son of Zeno and Viola (Wieneke) Gebhart . He attended Dyersville Xavier High School and graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1959 after moving to Dubuque. Following High School he worked for Meadow Gold Dairy. Dave served in the Iowa National Guard from 1959 to 1965.
After completing an apprenticeship and becoming a journeyman plumber, Dave worked for various plumbing shops. In 1973 he was hired at John Deere Works and shortly after became a supervisor in the plumbing department. Dave retired in 2000 after 27 years of dedicated service at John Deere. Dave was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 510 and Dubuque Sertoma Club.
In his retirement, Dave loved helping family and friends with any type of plumbing problem or repair. He was always so happy to lend a helping hand. On his two service trips with Resurrection parishioners to New Orleans he delighted in helping to clean out and repair homes for people who had experienced Hurricane Katrina.
Dave played softball for many years until he was later introduced to the game of golf - which he grew to love. Dave enjoyed spending time as a member of Lacoma and later Meadows Golf Course for many years. He was the first person to have an ‘Eagle’ at The Meadows. He was also proud to say he achieved a ‘Hole in One’ at both courses. He was always encouraging others and was happy to help them improve their golf swing. He and Ann loved wintering in Texas, Arizona or Florida and made countless new friends during retirement.
Dave’s faith was very important to him as was his long time parish, Resurrection Church, where he was a Eucharist Minister, helped with plumbing repairs at the school and rectory, participated in CEW’s, parish festivals and Resurrection’s locally sponsored Habitat for Humanity. Dave was also a member of Resurrection Men’s Scripture Sharing group, MESS.
Next to his faith, family was most important to Dave as he cherished every minute he could spend with his children and grandchildren. “Grandpa G” was always there with a big bear hug and his great, hearty laugh.
Dave faced many challenges while on his journey with Lewy Body Dementia but he was blessed with never losing his great sense of humor and his wonderful, infectious laugh. Dave’s beautiful smile would light up the room. Even in Dave’s final days, he was able to share his gift of laughter and great wit with others. Dave loved life and lived it to the fullest with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In keeping with his generous nature, Dave’s family knows he would have wanted to help others so his brain has been donated to Mayo Clinic‘s Dementia research program.
Dave is survived by his loving wife, Ann; son, Bob (Carol) Gebhart of Asbury, IA; daughter, Barb (Tim) Heim of Waukee, IA; grandchildren, Logan and Spencer Heim, Braden and Ava Gebhart; siblings, Diane (Tom) Sievers, *Don ( Barb) Gebhart, Sue (Cliff) Zapke, Deb (Erv) Hooks; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom Metz, Jean (Loras) Finn, Karen (Denny) Hanson, Jack (Patti) Fury, Pat (Rochelle) Fury, Victoria Fury, Bill (Martha) Fury, Mary Fury, Rick Fury, Tom Fury; two aunts, Grace and Lou Ann Wieneke; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
