Friends may call from 2-6 p.m., Sunday, at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd, where a prayer service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friends may also call from 9:00-10:15 a.m. Monday, at Holy Ghost Church.
Ozzie was born September 11, 1918, on a farm near Charlotte, Iowa, son of Oswald I. and Cecile (Burke) Dolan. His family then moved near Ryan, Iowa, where he graduated from High School in 1936. He attended DeVry Institute in Chicago and took a job at Delco Radio in Kokomo, Ind. for about a year. He then returned home and did farm work for a short time before deciding to join the Brothers of Holy Cross. As a brother, he took the name Brother Carlos and earned his Bachelor's Degree from Notre Dame University in 1944. He then worked in Washington D.C., where he received his Masters Degree from Catholic University in social work. He taught high school for several years, then in 1953, he became director of Rancho San Antonio Home for Boys, near Los Angeles. After 6 years, he was called to a different way of life when he met Marjorie L. Dolan, a widow of his first cousin, Paul Dolan. He received his dispensation of vows and returned to Iowa, where he married Marge on January 9, 1960 at Holy Family Church in Mason City and became father to her six young children. They moved to Dubuque where he became co-director at St. Mary's Home. He and Marge had three more children. In 1967, Ozzie took a job with Keystone AEA, as a social worker for the Dubuque Schools, until his retirement in 1984.
Ozzie's passion for travel and the outdoors led him and his family on many camping trips across the country, and down many a path and stream, in canoes and on horseback. He and Marge also enjoyed trips to Ireland, England, Europe and Ecuador. They pulled their RV on many trips across the US, every winter until 2010. He enjoyed selling World Book from 1967 to 1984 and donated many sets to Holy Ghost School and other institutions.
Ozzie wanted to learn about every person he met. He loved to engage in conversation because he was as good a listener as talker. He loved to read, play Scrabble and spend time with family. His life was an example of how to care for our world and have faith in God, taking one day at a time.
He was an active member of Holy Ghost Parish where he exemplified good stewardship in many ways. He was a member of the Dubuque chapter of the Lion's Club for over 40 years.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 57 years, Marjorie Dolan and his nine children:
Mary Neuhaus of Farley, Jim Dolan of Glendale, Arizona, Kathy (Mike) Weibel of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Greg Dolan of Glendale, Arizona, Tom (Ceci) Dolan of San Bernardino, California, Deb (Dave) Welsh of Dubuque, Marta (Randy) Bender of Bellevue, Barb (Chris) Ehlers of Dubuque, Amy (fiancé, Joe Andresen) of Dubuque; 24 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one more on the way; a sister Cecile (Jim) Salz of Mesa, Arizona, a brother, Emmett (Jean) Dolan, of Coggan, a sister-in-law, Anna Mae (Leo) Dolan, of Winthrop, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Chuck Neuhaus; five brothers, Ambrose (and Margaret, and Evelyn), Cyril (Mike) (and Geraldine), Leo, Clair (and Eileen), and Sylvan (Toby) (and Velma) and a sister, Regina (and Jack) Slattery.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Bethany Home and Hospice for all the care and kindness they have extended to Ozzie.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Holy Family Catholic Schools.
