Shirley I  Ring (Thompson)
Shirley I. Ring, 90, of Dubuque, passed away Monday, January 23, 2017. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, January 27 at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd, Dubuque. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 28 at St. Luke United Methodist Church, where there will be a visitation from 9:45 to 10:15 prior to the service. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Shirley was born on May 15, 1926 to Alfred and Alice (Haser) Thompson in New Diggins, Wisc. She married Donald Ring on March 17, 1948. He preceded her in death on April 7, 1978.

Shirley was truly devoted to her job as a nurse’s aide. Before retiring at age 85, she worked at Finley Hospital, VNA, and as a private in-home aid.

She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church for 60 years. During her time there, she was involved in the Busy Bees and helped serve the Saturday night Food for the Soul meal.
Shirley was always generous with her time. No matter how busy she was, she would make time for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was famous for her sour cream cookies and bottomless candy dish. Besides her work and family, Shirley enjoyed crocheting, flowers, and the Chicago Bulls.

Survivors include her children, Darryl (Judy) Ring of Lake Elsinore, CA, Renee (Larry) Kirby, Ronna (Jack) Scott, and Mark (Tracey) Ring all of Dubuque, grandchildren Jennifer (Brent) Wallin of Long Beach, CA, Lance (Kelly) Kirby of Dubuque, Chad (Christina) Kirby Westford, MA, Travis (Andrea) Kirby, Jody (D.J.) Ludowitz, Chantel (Shaun) Manning, Gina Scott, Heather (Jim) Hitzler, Chris (Ashley Bergfeld) Scott, all of Dubuque, Jason Ring of Lake Tahoe, CA, and Melissa (Greg) Stokes of Colorado Springs, CO: 22 great grandchildren and three more arriving in 2017; a sister Phyllis Moser of Dubuque; sister in law Rita Wong of Manly, IA; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque or St. Luke United Methodist Church.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, especially Lindsay, Nicole, and Jan for their excellent care.
