Vincent W. Welsh, 91, of Dubuque, passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at home, surrounded by his family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, December 30 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Dubuque Post #6. Visitation will be from 9:15-10:45 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Vincent was born on March 18, 1925 in Dubuque to John and Susan (Peters) Welsh. He left high school as a junior to enlist in the United States Navy. Vincent served on the USS Dorsey and USS Ault in the South China Sea and South Pacific during the two battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. During this time, he helped rescue 20 men from the USS Bunker Hill after it was hit by kamikazes. It was a privilege for his son, Pat, to accompany him on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.

On April 28, 1948, he married Marceline M. Ryan at St. Mary Catholic Church in Platteville, WI. He was employed at John Deere Dubuque Works as a plumber for 28 years until his retirement May 1987.

He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the American Legion Post #6.

Vincent was an avid Cubs fan and was thrilled to watch them win the World Series this year. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping in his earlier years.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 68 years, Marceline; their children, Kathy (Ron) Theobald of Dubuque, Pauline (Matt) Winney of Eureka, CA, Patrick (Sandi) Welsh of Dubuque and Sharon Winters of Burnsville, MN; nine grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters and four brothers.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of Dubuque, Sandi Welsh and James Bird for the excellent care they provided the last few weeks.
