Obituary for Marlyn Duane Bausman (Bausman)

Marlyn D. Bausman, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, 89, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2016, after a short bout of cancer. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held Saturday, January 7th, 2017 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2155 University Avenue, Dubuque, IA 52001. Friends may call from 9:00 am – 11:45 am. The Service will begin at Noon, followed by a luncheon.

Marlyn was born on November 9, 1927 in Stitzer, WI. He was the son of Wilbur and Norma Bausman of Shullsburg, WI. On December 28, 1952 Marlyn was united in marriage to Joyce Marlow at the Presbyterian Church in Lone Rock, IA.

Marlyn was a graduate of Shullsburg High School in Wisconsin. After high school, he served in the Army during the WWII Japanese occupation, where he played in a dance band. Following his time in the service, he attended the University of Dubuque where he earned his bachelor degree. He later received his master degree from the University of Iowa. He taught in Lone Rock, IA, Wilton, IA and then at Dubuque Senior High School as a Band Teacher for a total of 39 years.

Marlyn was a founding member of the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens where he helped maintain rose gardens, specifically, The Jodi Bausman Memorial Garden. He was instrumental in establishing “Music in the Gardens,” which takes place on Sunday evenings during the summer.

As an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, he served as an Elder and a Deacon, and on various committees. He was also a member of the church band. Marlyn’s other memberships include: Dubuque Area Retired School Personnel, the American Rose Society and the Linn County Rose Society. He was honored with the title “Rosarian Emeritus”.

His passions included: spending time with his family, his faith, gardening, music and sports. He was an avid Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He could play almost any musical instrument.

Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Joyce; son Tim Bausman of Dubuque, granddaughter Abbey (Steve) Efken of Asbury, grandson Dylan (Jessica Hoey) Bausman of Dubuque, and great-grandchildren Bailey Huett, Harrison Bausman and Jameson Efken; siblings Sharon Zink of Knoxville, TN, Jerry (Helyne) Bausman of Belvidere, IL, Hollis (Joanne) Bausman of Monroe, WI; sisters-in-law Janet Bausman of Freeport, IL and Wilma Bonstead of Walla Walla, WA, brothers-in-law Robert (Nancy) Marlow of Algona, IA and Jim (Colleen) Marlow of Spirit Lake, IA. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Marlyn was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Jodi Bausman; brother Darryl Bausman, brother-in-law Bob Zink; and niece Jackie Bausman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Marlyn’s name to The Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, Westminster Presbyterian Church or The University of Dubuque.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to all their family and friends for their love and support during this difficult time.
