Charles R  Schmitt
Charles R. Schmitt 92, of Luther Manor and formerly of 3070 Lindale St., passed away Friday, December 9, 2016 at Luther Manor surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 12, 2016 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Steven Rosonke officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd. where a parish scripture wake service will be recited at 6:00 p.m.
Charlie was born on March 24, 1924 in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Anthony and Irene (Slowey) Schmitt. On July 17, 1951, he married Rita Siegert at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. She preceded him in death on August 4, 2014. Charlie farmed until 1958 when he and Rita moved to Dubuque and he started his 26 year career as a milkman for Swiss Valley. Charlie retired in 1986. He was a member of St. Anthony’s parish and past member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Teamsters Union Local 421. Playing cards with friends and dancing were Charlie’s favorite past times. He will always be remembered for his gentle manner and positive outlook. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be missed by all.
Surviving are his children Janet (Rich) Bales, Jim (Ann) Schmitt, Joe (Geri) Schmitt and Jeff (Deb) Schmitt; grandchildren Shawna (Christopher) Donar, Trista (Steve) Calonder, Michael Willey, Kalen (Randi) Bales, Katie (Rob) Peterson, Gina Schmitt, Madeline (fiancé’ Jeff Craig) Schmitt, Eric (Stacey) Schmitt, Nick (Megan) Schmitt, Ali (fiancé’ Chris Gansen) Schmitt, Anna Schmitt, Alex Schmitt and Sam Schmitt; great grandchildren, Emma, Cael, Austin, Aidan, Nathanial, Ethan, Noah, Hannah, Ellie, Grace, Sophie, Aurelia, Charlie, Theo, Lilly, Magdalen, Noah Lee, Jacob and Layla; his brothers Robert and Herbert (Lorraine) Schmitt and his sisters-in-law Lois Schmitt and Edna Schiel.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita; his brothers Louis and Lester; his brothers-in-law Walter, Earl, Joseph “Sonny” and Leonard Siegert; his sisters-in-law Marie Kress and Eileen Bahl.
Memorials may be given to St. Anthony’s parish, Luther Manor or Hospice of Dubuque.
The Schmitt family wishes to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Luther Manor, Hospice of Dubuque, as well as Ali and Austin for their constant care and support.
