James E  Sawvel
James E. Sawvel, 75 of Dubuque, died Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at his home.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 16th at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Road. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Key West, IA. A celebration of life gathering for family and friends will be held from 11:30 a.m.- 2:00 p.m., Friday at the Funeral Home.
Jim was born on January 8, 1941 in Dubuque, the son of Donald and Katherine (Hellier) Sawvel.
In 1964, he married Peg Paisley and together they had three children. In 1989, he married Jean Stratton.
Jim was employed for the City of Dubuque and Dubuque Packing Company before joining the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office in 1973. He attended the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, devoting 30 years to Dubuque County, working road patrol, Investigations and finished his career with the Drug Task Force. Following his retirement in 2003, he was employed as a security officer at the Dubuque County Courthouse until 2007.
Jim was a member of the Iowa State Sheriff’s and Deputies’ Association, Associate Member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, the Iowa Rock & Roll Music Association, and a lifetime member of the NRA.
His greatest passion was the of sport of Rodeo. He enjoyed traveling throughout the Southwestern US, and had a love for the cowboys & Indians of the old Wild West. Jim also enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, and loved to fish with his closest friends.
Aside from his professional accomplishments, Jim was a 2-time Iowa State Champion calf roper, and was inducted into the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, for his time playing guitar and vocals for The Shades.
He had a gift for telling the greatest stories. He had a very generous and giving heart, was a mentor to many, and deeply valued the friendships he formed with his co-workers and friends.
He is survived by his children, Gina (Todd) Ryan, of Papillion, NE, Ann Butzier, of Dubuque, and Jim Sawvel, of Camanche, IA; step-daughter, Julie (Dave) Foster, of Blaine, MN; grandchildren, Lydia (Brian) Cassata, of Omaha, NE, Makenzie Ryan, of Kansas City, MO, Sarah Chapman, Ben Chapman, and Chris Chapman, all of Dubuque; and Cassie Hall, of Davenport, IA; step- granddaughters, Natalie Sieckert and Alexis Foster, of Blaine, MN; great- granddaughter, Nora Cassata, of Omaha, NE; his mother, Katherine Sawvel, of Dubuque; and siblings, Lois Selle, Jack (Diane) Sawvel, Kathy (Dan) Nesteby and Sue Sawvel, and several special nieces and nephews, all of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Sawvel; brothers, Donald (Elaine) Sawvel and Lawrence Sawvel; and his son-in-law, Douglas Butzier.

Memorials may be given to Special Olympics of Iowa and St. Labre School of Indians, both of which Jim faithfully supported, or to Hospice of Dubuque.
