Obituary for John A Frommelt

John A. Frommelt, 77 passed away peacefully Monday, April 25, 2016. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Raphael's Cathedral with Rev. Alan Dietzenbach officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corp League. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Cathedral where a parish scripture wake service will be recited at 7:30.

John was born on January 29, 1939 in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Cyril and Julia (Lowe) Frommelt. he married Nancy Speltz on May 6, 1962 at St. Columbkille Church and had 53 beautiful years together. John attended Nativity grade school, Loras Academy and Loras College. He was executive vice president of Frommelt Industries until his retirement in 1991.

John and Nancy loved spending time with their family and friends vacationing in Marco Island, Florida and summers at the cottage at Frentress Lake. He was a loving, kind and generous man who loved life and cherished his family and friends. Known as "Papa" to his children and grandchildren, John loved attending his grandchildren's sporting activities being their biggest fan and loudest cheerleader.

Volunteering his time and talents was very important to John. He traveled with the Red Cross to New Orleans after hurricane Katrina and spent 6 weeks helping those in need with the cleanup effort. He was a past member of St. Columbkille Parish and a current member of St. Raphael's Cathedral where he often attended weekly Mass. John was also a past member of the Army Reserves, Dubuque Golf and Country Club, Knights of Columbus Council 510, Serra Club and board member of the YM/YWCA and Boys & Girls Club. He was a current member of the Dubuque Shooting Society 990 Club having served as past president, a proud member of the Frentress Lake Yacht Club and the "Red Shirts" golfing club.

Those surviving John include his wife, Nancy of Dubuque; his children Michael (Stefanie) Frommelt of Lakeville, MN and their children Kelly, Luke and Sarah; Michelle (Andy) Burgmeier of Dubuque and their children Kaitlyn, Emily (fiancé' Eric May) Mitchell, Matthew and Elle; Jonathan (fiancé' Karen Teagarden) Frommelt of Davenport, IA and their children Madeline, Benjamin, Grace Cameron, Lily and Tessa; Nicholas (Julie) Frommelt of Naperville, IL., and their children Alivia, Aaron, Nora and Evan; and Theresa (John) Gibson of McFarland, WI and their children John Anthony, William and Mary. His sister, Mary Wendt of Appleton, WI; his brothers Nicholas (Toni) Frommelt and Paul (Betty) Frommelt both of Dubuque; his cousins David (Kay) Frommelt of Dubuque ; Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-laws James Wendt.

In lieu of flowers, a John A. Frommelt memorial fund has been established.

John's family would like to thank Dr. Thomas Lally, Dr. Mark Hermann, the nurses and staff at the Wendt Center ( especially Christine Brimeyer) and Dr. Catherine Price and Dr. Chintakuntlawar,ashish of Mayo Clinic for their exceptional care and support. Also a special thank you to all the caring friends and neighbors who helped John over the past 2 years.
