Barbara Ann  Apel (Long)
Barbara Ann "Jackie" Apel, daughter of Robert Elmer and Esther Printz Long, died peacefully at home on January 21, 2016.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 25 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 14th and Main Street, Dubuque. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services, Monday at the Church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.
Jackie was born on November 25, 1921 in Sac City, IA. She attended Sac City schools, Christian College and Iowa State College, where she met her future husband, Kenneth L. Apel. After Ken's enlistment in the Army at the start of WWII, Jackie lived with her parents and worked in a munitions plant in Ankeny, IA.
Ken and Jackie were married May 15, 1943 at Camp Rucker, Ala. They lived in Enterprise, Ala. (the home of the Boll Weevil) until Ken went overseas. Jackie lived with her parents in Arlington, Va. until Ken returned. When the war ended, they moved to Dubuque, Kenneth's home.
Jackie loved to sew, quilt, knit, read and play bridge. She enjoyed bird-watching in later years.
She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, CLIO and Hand- Mades.
On December 6, 2015 she celebrated her 77th year in PEO where she provided leadership and fascinating programs for her sisters. Jackie was a charter member of Chapter MP. During her 75 years in DAR, she served as Regent of the Julien Dubuque Chapter.
Ken, her husband of 62 years, preceded her in death in 2005.
Jackie is survived by three children, Tucki (Chip) Folkers, St. James City, Fla., Robert Kenneth (Christine Steiner), East Dubuque, Ill. and Timothy John (Wendy), Henderson, Nev.; four grandchildren, Max (Christa) Folkers, San Diego, Calif., Jen (Andy) Barnett, St. Paul, Minn., Ben Folkers, San Diego, Calif., and Eron Lyon, Hollywood, Calif.; four wonderful "GG Babes", Frances Ann and Lauren Barnett, Gus and Layla Folkers; her sister, Betty Printz Sims, Bethesda, Md.; and three nieces, Sarah Romano, Bekki Sims, and Anne Murphy. She is also survived by a wonderful circle of friends.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque or St. John's Episcopal Church.
The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Road is in charge of the arrangements.
