Obituary for John Ungs

John Peter Ungs, 80, of Dubuque, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, November 10, 2015. Visitation will be held Thursday, November 12 from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m.at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Rd, Dubuque, IA, where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 13 at 10:30 AM at Resurrection Catholic Church, Dubuque. There will be an additional visitation at the church from 9:30 AM until the time of service. A private family burial will be at the Holy Trinity Parish Cemetery in Luxemburg on Saturday.

John, son of Peter and Delphine (Zewen) Ungs was born on June 16, 1935 in Luxemburg, Iowa. On August 13, 1958 he married Patricia Ann Bruggemann of Petersburg, Iowa. She preceded him in death in March 1970. On October 16, 1971 he married Phyllis Mary Heidesch of Remsen, Iowa at Nativity Catholic Church in Dubuque.

John’s life passion was dairy farming. He proudly took over the family farm and raised purebred Holsteins. In 1989 he retired from farming and moved to Dubuque. While living in Dubuque he enjoyed various jobs. His two most memorable jobs were working at Sears and the Dubuque Bank and Trust mailroom/security.

John had many talents and interests on and off the farm. In his youth he managed the men’s Luxemburg basketball team. In his later years he coached the town’s Little League teams. He was an active member of the Holy Trinity Parish and helped initiate the annual Oktoberfest. He belonged to various parish organizations as well as the Knights of Columbus. He was a lifelong member of the Holstein Association and a chapter member of the Dubuque Dairy Association. His business ventures included owning an independent convenience store in New Vienna, professional photography, and designing his Dubuque home.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Phyllis; his children Mary Pat (Charles Jr.) Fischer of Colesburg, IA; Linda (Mark) Sexton of Ankeny, IA; Peter John Ungs of Bolingbrook, IL; Marty (Ann) Ungs of Urbandale, IA; Jim Ungs of Dubuque, IA; and William John (Christine) Ungs of Belgium, WI.; grandchildren Kristy (Josh) Howell, Kathy, Karrie, and Kevin Fischer, Steve (Kim) and Sarah Sexton, Madeline, Julianne, and Lily Ungs, Lexi, Tyler and Caden Ungs, Seth LaJoice, Reese and Zach Zimpelman; great grandchildren Hope, Ethan, Claire, Olivia, and James; John’s sisters Anna Mae Johnson of LaCrosse, WI; Jane Terfler of Rock Island, IL; and Inez (Ben) Lammers of Dyersville. John’s in- laws include Inez (Lawrence) Werner, Mae (Gary) Ksicinski, Dianne (Al) White, Shirley (Kenny) Rahe, Rick Bruggemann, Lyle (Ethel) Heidesch, Holly Nolan, Gordon (Mary) Grieve, and Gary (Rosie) Grage and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Patricia; daughter, Jean Ann; brothers- in- law Elmer Johnson, Ray Terfler, Bill Heidesch, and Jim Nolan; and sister-in-law Shirley Heidesch.

John’s family wishes to express gratitude to all family, friends, and health care providers for all their care and support.
