Obituary for Donald B Palmer

Donald B. Palmer 89, of Luther Manor, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Luther Manor. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Carter Hill officiating. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd. and from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Donald was born on February 15, 1926 in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Clyde and Ester (Newkirk) Palmer. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1943 and enlisted into the U.S. Navy that same year. On September 24, 1949, Donald married Elinor Rubie, she preceded him in death on June 8, 1977. He married Retha Wolfe-Peters on July 9, 1980, she preceded him in death on April 4, 2011.
Donald retired from the Dubuque Packing Company in 1981 and then worked at DB& T for the next 10 years. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and gardening. Donald also love to follow the Chicago Cubs, Bears and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Surviving are his sons: Steve (Linda) Palmer, Mark (Nancy) Palmer and Tom Palmer all of Dubuque and David (Lisa) Palmer of Lexington, KY; his stepsons, Doug (Ellen) Peters of LaMirada, CA and Steve "Craig" (Kay Ellen) Peters of Dubuque; 15 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; his sister, Sheila Pauly of Cedar Rapids, IA; brothers-in-law, John "Jack" Fay of Cedar Rapids. IA, Fred (Dorothy) Rubie, Arthur "Buzz" (Helen) Rubie, Dick (Jean) Rubie and Frank Augustin all of Dubuque and David Wolfe of Vancouver, WA; his sisters-in-law Irene Jecklin and Lois (Dave) Hartman both of Dubuque and Lona McGrew of Oskaloosa, IA.
He was preceded in death by his wives Elinor and Retha and 2 sisters, Dorothy Fay and Ruth McDonald.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Donald's family wishes to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Luther Manor for their care and support.
