John was born on March 13, 1916 in Williams, Iowa, son of Jens and Maggie (Gilbertson) Jensen. Growing up in Williams, he worked at the family restaurant and played football and basketball for his high school. After graduation, he attended Ellsworth Community College and was offered a position as a bookkeeper in Fayetteville, Ark.
He married his sweetheart, Frances Meister, on April 19, 1937 in Williams, Iowa, and returned to Fayetteville to begin their long life of nearly 74 years together. In 1954, he brought his family to Dubuque and continued his career in the lumber and logging business at Hubbard Walnut Company. The company later became RS Bacon Veneer, and John held the position of Vice President. He truly loved his work and his family.
John played golf well into his 80's at Dubuque Golf and Country Club. He loved to walk and took to the hills of Dubuque with gusto. John also loved to talk and would do so with anyone that would listen. He was a member of St. Columbkille's and lived his life through the "three P's", patience, persistence and prayer.
He is survived by his children, Julie Elliott of Jasper, Ind., John A. Jensen of Panama City Beach, Fla., and Jan (David Jegerlehner) Kaufman of Hazel Green, Wisc.; eight grandchildren, John (Jane) Connell, James Connell, Karyn (Dean Schroer) Connell, Pam (Steve) Moore, Lindy Elliott, Paula (Chris) Mataya, Jeff (Heather) Kaufman, and Kristine (David) Herrald; and 16 great grandchildren.
