Helen Nelson, 89 of DeWitt, Iowa, formerly of Eldridge and Dubuque, Iowa, died Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Genesis Medical Center, DeWitt.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 10 at First Congregational United Church of Christ where visitation will be Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens.
Helen was born August 15, 1925 in Creston, Iowa, daughter of Albert and Madeline (Peck) Wise. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1943. After high school, she went to work at the Pentagon for the War Department. On September 6, 1947 She married Frank Alfred Nelson at First Congregational United Church of Christ. He preceded her in death.
She worked at Dubuque Bank and Trust, American Trust and Savings Bank, and the Dubuque Community School District.
She was a member of T.T.T., Order of the Eastern Star, and was active in Colts Drum and Bugle Corps. She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ and the Coyople Club.
Helen enjoyed Bridge, knitting and Iowa Hawkeye games.
She is survived by two daughters, Julie (LeRoy) Timmerman of Dubuque and Jody (Gregory) Hingtgen of Eldridge; a son Dr. Craig Nelson of San Luis Obispo, California; four grandchildren, Eric (Melissa) Timmerman of Clive, Iowa, Heather (Tad) Jaques of DeWitt, Walker Hingtgen of Eldridge and PFC Mikaela Hingtgen of USMC Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; five great grandchilden; a sister, Marilyn Reiter of Dubuque and a sister in law, Joann Nelson of Muscatine, Iowa.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Dorothy Grantham; a grandson, Douglas Timmerman; and a great granddaughter, Cora Jaques.
Memorials may be made to West Wing Place Nursing Home, DeWitt, Iowa and T.T.T. Society.
The Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
