Carl was born April 29, 1929, in Dubuque, Iowa and lived out his life on his family farm in Peosta. He received 8 years of education at the Johnson Schoolhouse, 2 years at Senior High School, and 2 Winter Quarters of Farm Operations at Iowa State University. Rosemary Shumaker and Carl were united in marriage on October 8, 1960 at the Evangelical United Brethren church in Olin.

Carl served on many county boards such as Cattlemen, Extension, Fairboard and Sunnycrest. He received recognition as “Boardmember of the Year” on the Dubuque County Fairboard for overseeing the construction of the 4-H beef buildings, “Hall of Fame” for the Dubuque County Cattlemen, and “Friend of Agriculture” at the Rural Ministry Conference. For the Dubuque County Cattlemen, he served as President and the Liaison with the Dubuque Area Chamber. He participated in Dale Carnegie courses and was a member of Toastmasters.

He spent his life as a steward of God’s creation and a Shepard of God’s people. With the farm, he had great pride in his beef operation raising Hereford cattle and later transitioning to Red Angus. He also enjoyed raising and eating garden produce, with a special appetite for strawberries.

He served as Evangelism chair at St. Peter, Property - Building Committee and Evangelism for Lord of Life, and helped with St. Mark Community Center and Bethany Auxiliary.
